Pediatric collaborative improvement networks: bridging quality gaps to improve health outcomes.

چکیده
In 2003, the American Board of Pediatrics (ABP) endorsed a network model as a means to accelerate the translation of evidence into practice, to improve care and outcomes for children, and to serve as the gold standard for the performance in practice component of Maintenance of Certification (MOC) for pediatricians. This model involves multisite practice-based clinical networks that allow teams to learn from one another, to effectively test and implement changes, and to use data to understand and ultimately spread what works in practice. Networks are especially important in pediatrics, and particularly in subspecialty pediatrics, where no one center or group of physicians has a large enough sample of children to readily learn if what they are doing works.

Pediatric collaborative improvement networks: background and overview.
Multiple gaps exist in health care quality and outcomes for children, who receive <50% of recommended care. The American Board of Pediatrics has worked to develop an improvement network model for pediatric subspecialties as the optimal means to improve child health outcomes and to allow subspecialists to meet the performance in practice component of Maintenance of Certification requirements. By...
متن کاملThe path forward: collaborative networks and the future for children's health care.
Although significant gaps in care and outcomes for children exist, there is a path forward. The articles in this supplement reveal the successes of collaborative networks for improvement and research in various pediatric settings and present a scalable approach for addressing gaps in clinical quality. A range of organizations are working to refine the start-up, implementation, and sustainabilit...
متن کاملRoles for children's hospitals in pediatric collaborative improvement networks.
Children's hospitals represent a significant opportunity to reduce morbidity, mortality, and costs, particularly for children with complex chronic conditions (CCCs) who comprise a disproportionate and growing share of admissions, readmissions, and resource use. Most children with CCCs are in some way associated with a children's hospital, and the subspecialists who care for them are primarily c...
متن کاملExemplar pediatric collaborative improvement networks: achieving results.
A number of pediatric collaborative improvement networks have demonstrated improved care and outcomes for children. Regionally, Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center Physician Hospital Organization has sustained key asthma processes, substantially increased the percentage of their asthma population receiving "perfect care," and implemented an innovative pay-for-performance program with ...
متن کاملCollaborative networks for both improvement and research.
Moving significant therapeutic discoveries beyond early biomedical translation or T1 science and into practice involves: (1) T2 science, identifying "the right treatment for the right patient in the right way at the right time" (eg, patient-centered outcomes research) and tools to implement this knowledge (eg, guidelines, registries); and (2) T3 studies addressing how to achieve health care del...
